Third Grade

Welcome To Third Grade!

A lot more challenges await students in the 3rd grade.  Aside from the fact that they are not “little kids” anymore, there’s a major shift in the fundamental skills they learned from kindergarten to second grade.  The students are still expected to work independently, but are now encouraged and given more opportunities to work collaboratively with others in the completion of projects and activities.   In reading, instead of learning to read the third graders are now reading to learn.  Emphasis is placed more on “chapter books” rather than “picture books” as kids are encouraged to make their own mental pictures as they read.  In the area of writing, they are expected to write as a way to communicate ideas.  It’s not about just learning the fundamentals of writing (which is continuously taught), but it’s also about improving the skill of written communication through the use of the Writing Process (pre-write, revise, edit, and publish).  From fundamental numeracy (addition and subtraction), there is the challenging new level of abstract concepts of multiplication, division, fractions, equations, and even decimals in math.  These skills become more challenging as they are connected and applied to real-life situations.  Science and Social Studies deal more with the understanding and use of the scientific method, as well as learning more about geography and exploring multiculturalism.  For a more detailed view of the skills expected of a 3rd grader, please refer to the California Department of Education’s Content Standards for 3rd grade.
